What is Male Menopause?

The term male menopause is used to describe a set of symptoms and changes in middle-aged or older men that may be associated with hormonal fluctuations, particularly a decline in testosterone levels.

Hormone changes are a natural part of aging, although aging related hormone changes in men are different from those in women. Unlike the dramatic hormone decline that occurs in women during menopause, changes in men tend to occur more gradually. In men, testosterone levels typically decline with age, starting around the age of 30. This decline can lead to various symptoms, commonly referred to as andropause or late-onset hypogonadism.

Symptoms of low testosterone can cause physical, sexual, and psychological problems including:

  • Fatigue

  • Mood swings

  • Depression

  • Reduced libido or sexual desire

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Breast discomfort or swelling

  • Infertility

  • Lack of energy

  • Insomnia

  • Reduction in muscle strength

  • Increased body fat

  • Decreased bone density

  • Hot flashes

If you are experiencing symptoms that could be related to hormonal changes, Rufus Health will perform a blood test to assess hormone levels and provide guidance on appropriate interventions if necessary. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is one potential treatment monitored under the guidance of our Medical Director.
